(-Death)rant.net is my personal blog in which I share my opinions about veganism, zoophilia, ethics, philosophy and future technological developments (for example the technological Singularity) and their interrelations. I also share my visions about a positive future, my experiences with phases of depression and how I have overcome them. In that context, (-Death)rant.net is also a blog about psychology and self-improvement.
About: Title
The title “(-Death)rant.net” might confuse you, so I need to explain it here. Initially I started this blog in a phase of depression as an attempt to end it by writing about what really bothers me most. That didn’t work out too well, by the way. I’ve chosen the domain deathrant.net as signal that it would contain my last important objections against this world in the case that I committed suicide sometime. However, blogging is more fun that killing myself, so I can do without the latter.
Another aspect of the title is about speaking against that what I termed “Culture of Death“, which consists in glorifying or tabooing death. Examples for such behavior are saying that life only gets its meaning by the existence of death, or accepting the systematic murder of billions of non-human animals each year, for example just to make food out of them. Consequently, I am much in favor of eliminating involuntary death (of humans and non-human animals) through the ethical use of advanced technology, which is hopefully available in the future.
About: Author
While my name in the web is RadiVis, like Radical Visionary, and my name in Second Life is Metafire Horsley, in the material realm I am known as Michael Hrenka. I study mathematics and physics at the University of Tübingen in Germany where I have tutored several exercise groups. There are some reasons why I have chosen those subjects, although my main area of interest is philosophy:
- Studying mathematics facilitates clear thinking much better than studying philosophy. Thus learning mathematics makes me a better philosopher than learning philosophy, at least in some respects.
- I am interested in reading and writing science fiction stories, so I thought that knowing about mathematics and physics would deepen my understanding in the area of science fiction.
- It is easier to get a job with a degree in mathematics and physics than with a philosophy degree.
Currently I am busy with working on my diploma thesis in topological complex K-theory and preparing my career as freelancing blogger. As I am most interested in the philosophical exploration of problems that might arise in the (distant) future, I describe myself as explorative philosopher. What I want to achieve, is to make this world a better place for all sentient beings. I think the best way for me to do that, is to explore philosophical ideas and to spread them. I’m especially interested in thinking about the big picture:
- How to define a purposeful existence? What is the best thing to do?
- Which societal system are suited best for the thriving of all sentient life?
- What am I really? What is the world? And what else is there?
One of my main tools for exploring these questions is to imagine possible worlds settled in the (distant) future. In other words, I write science fiction stories in order to explore and explain my ideas in more detail than would be possible without that tool. Those stories can be found on my blog radivis.com.
